The article “'The Most Expensive GIF of All Time' Is Being Sold for $5,800” was very interesting to read in 2022 as this article came out 7 years ago and the information is out of date. Today, art like this GIF are being sold for much higher than $5,800 due to increased engagement and appeal in digital art and the introduction of NFTs which are digital assets. It is interesting to see how quickly things can change within society and how new technologies are introduced all the time constantly altering societal norms and thinking. During the writing of this article, the author had no idea that people would be selling their GIFs online in the coming future. Essentially, this article predicted what was to come within the boundaries of digital art without even knowing it! I particularly agree with the article stating that “As modern art has exhausted its own frame with postmodern maximalist expression of all that was left, a new generation of artists have found inspiration from new tools that represent their time on earth”. I feel like this statement, although not at the time it was published, rings very true for today’s generation of makers. With the constant introduction of new resources and technologies, art, specifically what is considered popular art and that which is sold at high bidding prices, is bound to transition and introduce new boundaries and processes to represent the most current times. This seems inevitable to say now, but who knows what I would have said 7 years ago reading this article without the knowledge of the success of digital art that I do now.
These are examples of popular NFT's, or non-fungible tokens, that have sold for A LOT of money$$$:
